National Championship Competition Underway For Cougars
CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Intercollegiate Sailing Association (ICSA) National Championships are underway for the nationally-ranked College of Charleston coed and women’s sailing teams at the San Diego Yacht Club in San Diego, Calif.
The 11-day competition consists of three championship regattas and two semifinal qualifiers – the ICSA Women’s National Semifinal Championship on May 24-25, the ICSA Sperry Women’s National Championship on May 26-27, the ICSA LaserPerformance Team Race National Championship on May 28-30, the ICSA Coed National Semifinal Championship on May 31-June 1 and the ICSA Gill Coed National Championship on June 2-3.
The Cougars are currently competing in the Western Semifinals against teams from Brown, Christopher Newport, Dartmouth, Eckerd College, Fordham, Georgetown, Harvard, Hobart & William Smith, Northwestern, Texas A&M-Galveston, U.S. Coast Guard Academy, U.S. Naval Academy, Cal, UC Santa Barbara, Washington, Wisconsin and Yale.
In A-Division, Charleston is represented by sophomore skipper Clare Dahl (Newport Beach, Calif.) with sophomore crew Grace McCarthy (San Diego, Calif.) and junior crew Bayley Davidson (Newport Beach, Calif.) as well as senior skipper Beka Schiff (Tampa, Fla.) and freshman crew Annabel Carrington (White Stone, Va.) and junior crew Chloe Dapp (Newport Beach, Calif.).
In B-Division, junior skipper Nikki Medley (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) and sophomore skipper Elizabeth Pemberton (Osterville, Mass.) will sail with junior crew Irene Abascal (Guatemala City, Guatemala), senior crew Emily Stuart (Newport, R.I.) and freshman crew Caroline Bracken.
Nine of the top-finishing schools from each of the Eastern Semifinals and Western Semifinals will move on to the finals. The Top 18 from the semifinals will compete for the Sperry Women’s National Championship title and the Gerald C. Miller Trophy.
