*Georgia State took down FAU in quarterfinal action Saturday afternoon 3-2 behind three-set wins from Eden Hawes and Maddy Delmonte, and Maddie Gordon and Becky Tresham.

*Brooke Weiner and Kate Novack won match number 13 in a row, and match 91 of Weiner’s career moving her into first place in GSU history.

*GSU will face Florida State in tomorrow’s semifinals.


ATLANTA- No. 16 Georgia State beach volleyball knocked off FAU in a 3-2 classic on a cold and rainy Saturday afternoon to advance to the CCSA Tournament semifinals. The Panthers will face top-seeded Florida State at 10:00 a.m. Sunday morning.


GSU jumped out to an early lead as Brooke Weiner and Kate Novack won their 13 straight match, 21-10, 21-15. The win was number 91 on the career for Weiner, passing Delaney Rohan for first in Georgia State history.


The Owls answered with a two-set win on court five tying the dual at 1-1. The teams would split sets on courts one, two, and four with each going to a deciding third. Maddie Gordon and Becky Tresham took control early en route to a 15-10 win that would give GSU a 2-1 lead in the dual.


After dropping the opening set, Eden Hawes and Maddy Delmonte would storm back to take the second 22-20. The duo faced multiple match points, but ultimately came back for an 18-16 win to clinch the match for the Panthers.


“I am so proud of our team, but especially Delmo and Eden,” said coach Beth Van Fleet. “After falling behind they grinded out those second and third sets and showed an incredible amount of grit, passion, and purpose.”


The Owls would take the point on court two to make the final score 3-2. “It seems like we play FAU every single year in this tournament,” said Van Fleet. “We bring the best out of one another and our programs only grow from the intense competition. They are a tremendous team.”


GSU will face FSU in the semifinal at 10:00 a.m. tomorrow, while FIU and LSU battle in the other semifinal. The winners will faceoff for the CCSA title at 12:00 p.m.


All matches will be played at the Rally Volleyball Courts at the LakePoint Sporting Community in Cartersville, Georgia. Parking is available at 163 LakePoint Parkway, Cartersville, Georgia 30121 for $5 per car.
