Women’s Basketball Announces Non-Conference Slate
CHARLESTON, S.C. – Headlined by three ACC opponents and four games at home in TD Arena, the College of Charleston women’s basketball program announced its non-conference schedule for the 2016-17 campaign.
“We’re playing a lot of the opponents this year that we did last year, so it’s an opportunity to game plan for familiar teams in different environments,” head coach Candice M. Jackson said. “We love playing teams that are highly competitive, and playing three ACC teams helps us accomplish that. I feel like we’ve struck a good balance that will help us prepare for CAA play.”
Fans will have their first opportunity to get a look at the Cougars in a home exhibition on Wednesday, Nov. 2 when CofC hosts the Armstrong State Pirates (16-12) of the Peach Belt Conference. Eleven days after that, the College plays its official home opener on Sunday, Nov. 13 against Charlotte (19-12). The Cougars met the 49ers last season in the Queen City, where Charlotte pulled away for the win.
“I expect our team to come out ready to go in our exhibition and our home opener,” Jackson said. “They represent chances for us as a staff to assess our team, things we like and things that we’ll need to iron out. I’m most excited to see how our team grows from the Charlotte game and how they get better from game to game.”
The College will then pack up and hit the road for two games up north. They will first face Winthrop (4-26) in Rock Hill, S.C., where they will look to push their all-time record against the Eagles to 26-3. After that, the College moves on to Raleigh, N.C. to take on NC State (20-11) for the first time since 2010.
Just two days before Thanksgiving, the Cougars will return home looking for an early turkey dinner as they will tip off against the Virginia Tech Hokies (18-14). After that, the Cougars will head to Boone to square off against former SoCON rival Appalachian State (10-20), before closing out the month back at home in the program’s first-ever meeting with the North Florida Ospreys (7-23).
The College will kick off December with a three-game trip, which begins with a Dec. 4 showdown in the Lone Star state against the Houston Cougars (6-24), whom CofC vanquished 55-48 last season in their home opener.
After that, the College will be in line for a tough weekend-battle in Kentucky, beginning with a Friday showdown with the Louisville Cardinals (26-8) and concluding with a Sunday meeting with the Western Kentucky Lady Toppers (27-7). Both teams received attention in the national polls last season, and both prevailed over the Cougars in Charleston last season. However, the Cougars fell to Louisville by a mere four points in their meeting, and will head to the KFC Yum! Center with upset on their mind.
“Our trip to Kentucky is going to be important for us,” Jackson said. “Louisville and Western Kentucky are both great, NCAA Tournament teams, and it’ll be a great chance for us to see how we stack up against some of the best. Not only that, it will give (sophomore guard) Darien Huff a chance to go home and play in front of her friends and family, so we’re looking forward to it.”
CofC closes out its non-conference slate with two games against nearby South Carolina rivals, beginning with a home affair against Coastal Carolina (12-18) on Dec. 20, followed by a cross-town showdown in The Buc Dome against Charleston Southern (14-17). The Cougars have a combined 80-24 all-time record against the Chanticleers and Buccaneers.
All times will be released in the future as they become available.
