CHARLESTON, S.C. – With just three games remaining in the regular season before the CAA Tournament, the College of Charleston women’s basketball team (9-17; 4-11 vs. CAA) will look to build momentum with a win Sunday when they play the Hofstra Pride (20-7; 11-5 vs. CAA) in Hempstead, N.Y. at 2 p.m.
The Cougars will look to rebound from their current five game-skid, which began following their 49-46 upset-home-win over the Drexel Dragons. Most recently, CofC fell 78-66 on the road at Northeastern in a game where Breanna Bolden and Jackie Luna-Castro each had 16 points and combined for 15 rebounds.
The College hosted Hofstra earlier in the season in TD Arena, and nearly pulled off an upset win. CofC led for over 29 minutes of the game, but the Pride battled back to seize the lead late and escape with a 62-58 win. Bolden came away with a 13-12 double-double in defeat, while Luna-Castro scored a career-high 22 points.
Hofstra and CofC have played five times in women’s basketball, dating back to the Cougars’ first season in the CAA. The College won the first two meetings in 2013-14, but Hofstra’s bounced back to win the past three straight.
The Pride don’t rank first in the CAA in any categories, but do rank second in many of them, including scoring offense, scoring defense, scoring margin, field goal defense, 3-pt FG defense, and rebounding margin.
Individually, Bolden leads the CAA in steals per game with 2.9, while ranking in the Top 5 in both scoring (14.1 PPG) and free throw shooting (78.9%). Hofstra’s production is conversely quite a bit more spread out. In the frontcourt, Ashunae Durant and Anjie White both rank Top 5 in the CAA in rebounds with 9.2 and 8.1 RPG respectively, with White also ranking second in blocks. In the backcourt, both Darius Faulk and Krystal Luciano rank in the Top 5 in assists with 5.0 and 4.0 APG a piece, with Faulk also ranking fourth in the conference in steals with 1.8 SPG.
