CHARLESTON, S.C. – College of Charleston freshman outside hitter Lauren Freed (Troy, Ohio) had a career night recording 20 kills and 11 digs in a 3-1 victory over VCU, 25-16, 25-27, 25-21, 26-24, on Friday night at TD Arena.
Freed was joined in the double-double club by sophomore outside hitter Devon Rachel (Louisville, Ky.), who made 15 kills and 12 digs against the Rams (3-5). Freed and Rachel boasted hitting percentages of .348 and .387 respectively. Sophomore Kennedy Madison (Evansville, Ind.) was also in double-figure kills with 10.
Just like the second set, the fourth set was a thriller as Freed and sophomore setter Allison Beckman (Apex, N.C.) combined for the match point – appropriately Freed’s 20th kill and Beckman’s 56th assist of the night.
Defensively, the Cougars (4-3) were led in blocks for the second-straight match by junior middle blocker Jane Feddersen (Leesburg, Va.), who made a season-high seven total with one solo.
Coach Kepner Thoughts: “VCU is a tough and physical team. I am so proud of how we responded tonight and how we communicated with each other. We worked on a lot of little things in practice this week and we continue to improve every match. Lauren (Freed) had one of the best matches of her career and we know we will see a lot more of that in the future. Devon (Rachel) also had a tremendous match for us as did Jane (Feddersen), who has led in blocks in back-to-back matches.”
Double-Trouble: Lauren Freed and Devon Rachel became the first duo this season to turn in double-double performances in the same match. Freed turned in the first of her career (career-high 20 kills and 11 digs), while it was the sixth of Rachel’s career and first of the season (15 kills and 12 digs).
That’s Our Setter: Allison Beckman had two kills and a season-high 56 assists – more than VCU’s total for the entire match (49).
CofC Classic Continues: The Cougars have a quick turnaround as they prep for intracity rival Charleston Southern (3-7) on Saturday, Sept. 10 at 1 p.m. (ET) and their nightcap versus Eastern Michigan (3-5) at 7 p.m. (ET).
