Coach Kepner Pre-Tournament Thoughts: “We have improved every day in practice and are ready to step on the court to play hard and play together this weekend. This is our first trip of the year and it will be a great bonding experience for our team. Loyola is a really tough team and played close matches against Iowa, DePaul and Northern Illinois last weekend, while Davidson defeated UNCW in three. Anytime you play an ACC opponent (Wake Forest) on their home court, it’s going to be a challenge. This week, we focused on the small details of the game and having better communication in our matches. All of these road trips (Wake Forest and Baylor-hosted tournaments ahead) help us prepare for our CAA schedule with a chance to play the very best in hostile environments.”
Rivalry Revisited: The Cougars will face former Southern Conference rival Davidson for the first time since the 2014 season opener (W, 3-2) and both being members of the CAA and Atlantic 10.
Top Offensive Performance: Sophomore middle blocker Kennedy Madison (Evansville, Ind.) led the Cougars to a 2-1 weekend with wins over UT Martin and Binghamton during the Hampton Inn Charleston/West Ashley CofC Invitational on Aug. 26-27. She made a team-leading 27 kills with a .241 hitting percentage and a team-high eight blocks (three solos) versus the Skyhawks, Gamecocks and Bearcats combined.
Fountain of Youth: Last weekend, freshman outside hitter Lauren Freed (Troy, Ohio) made her collegiate debut and saw action in eight of nine sets played during the Hampton Inn Charleston/West Ashley CofC Invitational. She made a total of 15 kills and 17 digs including a near double-double of nine kills and nine digs against Binghamton on Aug. 27.
