Cougars Picked To Finish Fifth In Preseason Poll
RICHMOND, Va. – The College of Charleston volleyball team was picked to finish fifth in the preseason Colonial Athletic Association coaches poll released on Wednesday.
The Cougars garnered 42 points and have advanced to the CAA Championship title match each of the past three seasons, winning the crown in the program’s inaugural season as a member of the league in 2013.
“I am very excited for the new season to begin,” said CofC Head Coach Jason Kepner, who enters his 10th season with the Cougars. “We have a large group of new players and I look for them to make an impact.”
They return six returners while welcoming nine newcomers to the squad including preseason CAA Honorable Mention selections Krissy Mummey (Hudson, Ohio) and Kennedy Madison (Evansville, Ind.) – both middle blockers. Madison was named to the 2015 All-CAA Third Team and CAA All-Rookie Team.
Last season, CofC compiled a 20-13 overall record and reached the CAA title game for the third-straight season. The Cougars became the first No. 5 seed to ever reach the final game of the tournament and they also recorded at least 20 wins for the sixth-consecutive season.
“This is a fun group to work with,” Kepner said. “I really think they will continue to get better and better all year long, which will put us in a good position when we start the CAA portion of our schedule.”
Hofstra (56 points) was picked as the preseason favorite followed by UNCW in second (52 points), Towson third (51 points), James Madison fourth (49 points), CofC fifth, Delaware sixth (25 points), William & Mary seventh (20 points), Northeastern eighth (16 points) and Elon ninth (13 points).
The Cougars will commence the season with the home-hosted CofC Invitational with matches slated against UT Martin, South Carolina and Binghamton on Aug. 26 and 27 at TD Arena.
