MT. PLEASANT, S.C. – The College of Charleston women’s tennis made its long-awaited fall debut Saturday, turning heads in the top flights of both singles and doubles play at the 16th Annual CofC Invitational.

Things started off with a quick slew of doubles matches, which the Cougars excelled at in both the A1 and A2 brackets. Top-billed Mara Argyriou and Christi Woodson pulled off a 6-3 win over their opponents from Charlotte, while Liza Fieldsend and Helena Nyikos also dispatched their 49er opposition by a tally of 6-4. Both CofC tandems head to the semi-finals tomorrow in their respective brackets.

Argyriou and Nyikos would each go on to roll through A3 singles. Argyriou rolled through her opponents with ease, beating Sabrina Barisano of UNCW 6-1, 6-2 before cruising past Carolina Meregali of Stetson 6-1, 6-1. Nyikos had a bit more challenging of a journey, but ultimately ended up in the same place. After a quick victory over Annika Hepp of Samford (6-1, 6-0), the Austrian would have to stage a come-from-behind rally against Coastal Carolina’s Rylie Cox, prevailing 4-6, 6-3, 10-5. Having cleaned out the bracket, Nyikos and Argyriou are now slated to face one another for the A3 championship.

Fieldsend and Woodson both experienced mixed results in singles play in the A1 and A2 brackets respectively. Woodson got off to a hot start by beating Sierra Stone 6-3, 6-3, but then fell to Sara Bondar of CCU 6-2, 6-4, dropping her into tomorrow’s 3rd-place contest. Likewise, Fieldsend quickly vanquished Romane Delay 6-1, 6-2, but then got edged in a thrilling match with Charlotte’s Tai Martin by a score of 7-6(5), 3-6, 12-10.

The Cougars will return to Patriots Point Sunday morning at 9 a.m. The day will begin with a healthy dose of doubles play, followed by the closing rounds of singles action.
