Women's Tennis Set to Open CAA Tournament vs. No. 5 Seed UNCW
CHARLESTON, S.C. – The fourth seeded College of Charleston women’s tennis team will kick off the postseason Friday with the commencement of the CAA Tennis Championships in Elon, N.C., where they will take on the No. 5 seed UNCW Seahawks (9-8) at 9:00 a.m.
The Cougars finished the regular season with a 15-11 record to earn Director of Tennis Angelo Anastopoulo his 24th winning season in 25 years at the helm of the CofC women’s tennis program.
As fate would have it, the College’s last opponent was UNCW, who happens to be their first round opponent. When the two teams met earlier this month, CofC went on the road to hand the Seahawks a 4-3 loss in Wilmington. The Cougars pushed the score to 4-1 early to secure the win, after which Liza Fieldsend and Helena Nyikos dropped the final two matches with neither contest factoring into the ultimate outcome.
On the season, Fieldsend has led the Cougars in top-flight singles with a 14-9 record overall. Mara Argyriou and Helena Nyikos both have outstanding records in middle-flight action as well with marks of 17-5 and 17-4 respectively. Argyriou and Katherine Schofield have been dominant for the Cougars in top-flight doubles, with an 18-5 record as a tandem.
The Seahawks have won four of their last six matches this season, including a 7-0 win in their most recent contest against Mount Olive. Christine Kharkevitch sports the team’s best overall record at 11-5, with six of those wins coming in second-flight action. In doubles, Sabrina Barisano and Madara Straume have combined for a 12-4 record on the season.
Should the Cougars prevail over UNCW, they will go on to face the winner of the No. 1 seeded William & Mary Tribe (15-6) and the No. 8 seeded Hofstra Pride (14-6). That matchup would take place at 2 p.m. on Saturday.
