CHARLESTON, S.C. – The College of Charleston women’s tennis team (14-11) honored Katherine Schofield and Brooke McAmis on Senior Day Sunday, but the Liberty Lady Flames (12-9) spoiled the occasion by pulling out the 4-2 win.

The Cougars started the day with difficulty, as Liberty came out strong in doubles action. The Lady Flames earned two quick wins in the top two flights to secure the point, leaving Liza Fieldsend and Sarah Zschunke’s exciting third flight tilt unfinished at 5-5.

The Cougars bounced back in singles play when Schofield locked up the match at 1-1 by way of a 6-3, 6-2 win in the second flight over Anna Dollar, making the most of her Patriots Point swan song. The Lady Flames fired back though, scoring a pair of wins in the lower flights to put the Cougars on the brink 3-1.

Liza Fieldsend gave the Cougars hope with a thrilling top-flight showdown with Maria Khval. Fieldsend dropped the opening set 5-7, but rebounded to crush Khval 6-1 in the next set. After trailing for most of the third set, Fieldsend brought the contest to a 6-6 tie. At that point, Fieldsend flipped the switch to put her opponent away, winning the tie break handily at 7-1. Unfortunately, McAmis dropped her third flight matchup with Evangeline Crist, which sealed the win for Liberty.

The Cougars will hit the road for the first time in over a month this Saturday for their regular season finale, when they take on the UNCW Seahawks (8-7) at 1:30 p.m.
