MT. PLEASANT, S.C. – The College of Charleston men’s soccer team set the tone for the season Sunday night, going blow-for-blow against a stiff UNF attack to ultimately prevail 2-1 in a 120-minute exhibition affair.
• Nico Rittmeyer got the scoring started early, fielding a pass from sophomore Cornell Holland in the box before turning into the shot and sailing it past UNF keeper Juanes Fajardo to give CofC the 1-0 edge (14’). Later in the game, Eli Dent had a nearly identical goal on the other end, this time from T.K. Abderahman to deliver the game-winning-goal in the 72nd minute.
• Treston Kederer stood tall in UNF’s second PK of the night, making the diving save to deny Andrey Rosales in the second frame and protect the CofC lead.
• The Ospreys got onto the board 14 minutes after Rittmeyer’s goal by way of a penalty kick. Glenn Johnson sailed it to the low corner past Kevin Shields to tie the game 1-1.
• The teams were aggressive in pursuing shots, with CofC edging the Ospreys 19-15. The on-target chances were split dead even at six a piece.
“I had a couple of chances early on that I couldn’t put away, so I knew the pressure was on to get it done,” Dent said. “I made sure the defender was off me so I could pull the ball around, and just tucked it away. It was just a great feeling to get back to it and get off on the right foot and step up for my team.”
The Cougars will be back in action this Thursday with a road exhibition affair against Queens at 5 p.m.
