KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. – All five of the College of Charleston men’s golf team’s starters shot under-par during the first 36 holes of play at The Invitational at The Ocean Course held Monday at the Kiawah Island Golf Resort.
Leading the way was senior Parker Derby (Columbus, Ga.), who shot rounds of 71 and 70 and is tied for 14th individually at 3-under par. Meanwhile, freshmen Michael Sass (Louisville, Ky.) and Logan Sowell (Kershaw, S.C.) are both tied for 23rd at 2-under par in their collegiate debuts. Sass shot an opening-round 68 with five birdies.
Senior William Rainey (Charlotte, N.C.), who was last year’s individual medalist, and freshman Hunter Dunagan (Augusta, Ga.) are tied for 30th shooting 1-under par.
As a team, the Cougars are currently in fifth with a two-round score of 564 (-12) in the 16-team field. Middle Tennessee State leads the pack (-20), Georgia State in second (-17) and Ole Miss tied for third with Augusta (-15).
“I am really proud of the way this team played today,” CofC Head Coach Mark McEntire said. “To have all five players in our Top 5 under-par at The Ocean Course in their first rounds of the year and first rounds of college golf as freshmen is really good. This team is going to do so great things this year and I look forward to watching it all come together.”
The tournament concludes tomorrow with a 7:30 a.m. (ET) shotgun start for the final 18 holes of play. CofC will be paired with West Virginia, Maryland and Georgia Southern and tee off the No. 13 through No. 16 holes. Live tournament scoring will be available at: www.Golfstat.com.
