CHARLESTON, S.C. – Senior William Rainey (Charlotte, N.C.) will look to defend his individual title as the College of Charleston men’s golf team prepares to host The Invitational at The Ocean Course on Sept. 12-13 at the Kiawah Island Resort on Kiawah Island, S.C.
This year’s tournament field includes Augusta, Charleston Southern, Cincinnati, Coastal Carolina, Francis Marion, Georgia Southern, Georgia State, Maryland, Middle Tennessee, Ole Miss, South Alabama, Troy, VCU, Winthrop and West Virginia.
The par-72 course will play at 7,115 yards and has played host to the 2007 Senior PGA and 2012 PGA Championships. It will also host the 2021 PGA Championship. The picturesque Ocean Course is only the fourth course to host each of the PGA of America’s major championships.
Last year, Rainey shot 5-under par to claim individual medalist honors, while Georgia Southern fired a three-round score of 873 (+9) to edge the Cougars for the team title (+13).
He is joined in the lineup by freshman Hunter Dunagan (Augusta, Ga.), senior Parker Derby (Columbus, Ga.), freshman Michael Sass (Louisville, Ky.) and freshman Logan Sowell (Kershaw, S.C.).
Competing as individuals will be senior Philip Oweida (Charlotte, N.C.), freshman Christian Baliker (Simpsonville, S.C.), sophomore Zach Bishop (Travelers Rest, S.C.), freshman Jack Foyle (Madison, Conn.) and freshman Fitz Woodrow IV (Lexington, S.C.).
“We are extremely excited to get the season started,” CofC Head Coach Mark McEntire said. “We have a bunch of new faces on our team. We will be playing two seniors and three freshmen for our first event of the season. I am looking for a good week and glad the season is finally here.”
Probably no other golf course in the world outside of the United Kingdom and Ireland is affected as much by the wind. Located on the eastern-most end of Kiawah Island, The Ocean Course has more seaside holes than any other course in the Northern Hemisphere.
The tournament format includes 36 holes of continuous play beginning with a 7:30 a.m. (ET) shotgun start on Monday and the final round with another 7:30 a.m. (ET) shotgun start on Tuesday. Live tournament scoring will be available at: www.Golfstat.com.
