Leeza Nemchinov, Olivia Thaler Head to ITA Atlantic Regional

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - The William & Mary women’s tennis team will send of pair of representatives to the ITA Atlantic Regional Championships, beginning on Friday, at The Sports Racket in Lynchburg, Va. Senior Leeza Nemchinov is the No. 5 seed in the main singles draw, while sophomore Olivia Thaler will also take part in singles competition. The duo combines to comprise the No. 4 seeded team in the main doubles draw as well.

The event kicks off with two rounds of the qualifying draw and the first round of the 48-team main doubles bracket. The main singles draw begins on Friday morning. Nemchinov, who is ranked No. 46 nationally and sports a 3-1 ledger, meets Georgetown’s Victoire Saperstein at 10 a.m., while Thaler takes on a qualifier at 8:30 a.m.

Friday continues with second and third rounds of the doubles events. After receiving an opening-round bye, Nemchinov and Thaler face the winner of a first-round meeting between the Towson pair of Yevgeniya Shusterman and Lucy Williams and Liberty’s Evangeline Crist and Valerie Thong in round two.

Saturday includes two rounds of the singles draw and the quarterfinals of the doubles bracket. The singles quarterfinals and semifinals are set for Sunday along with the doubles semifinals. Both the singles and doubles championships will be on Monday, Oct. 19.

Historically, the Tribe has enjoyed significant success at the ITA regional championships. W&M players have claimed eight regional titles between singles and doubles over the last 12 years. The last Tribe regional crown came in 2012 when Jeltje Loomans and Maria Belaya won the Atlantic Region Doubles crown. 

The singles and doubles winners of the ITA Atlantic Regional will earn a spot in the exclusion USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, N.Y., Nov. 12-15. Hosted by Columbia University, the National Indoor Intercollegiate Championship is the third fall national championship event in college tennis and includes a 32-player singles draw and 20-team doubles bracket for both men and women.
