PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif. - William & Mary women’s tennis senior Leeza Nemchinov took part in the second collegiate national championship event of the fall, splitting her matches against nationally-ranked competition in the qualifying bracket of the Riviera/ITA All-American Championship on Tuesday.
Nemchinov opened the day with a three-set win over No. 68-ranked Jean Runglerdkriangkrai of Pepperdine. After the pair split the opening two sets by matching, 6-3, scores, the Tribe senior picked up her third win of the fall with a 6-4 triumph in the third. Runglerdkriangkrai is a two-time All-West Coast Conference First Team honoree. The win was also the 70th of Nemchinov's W&M career.
After winning her opening round match, Nemchinov squared off with the qualifying flight’s No. 6 seed in Georgia’s Ellen Perez, who was also ranked No. 29 nationally. Perez won the opening set, 6-3, before Nemchinov, who is ranked No. 46 nationally, rallied to win the second, 6-3. The Bulldog All-American outlasted the Tribe senior, 6-4, in the third set. Perez advanced to the round of 16 on Wednesday with one of eight spots available in the exclusive 32-player main draw.
Nemchinov and the Tribe return to action when they travel to Lynchburg, Va., for the ITA All-American Championships, Oct. 15-19. Liberty is the host of the regional at The Sports Racket. The singles and doubles winners of the ITA Atlantic Regional will earn a spot in the exclusion USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, N.Y., Nov. 12-15, 2015. Hosted by Columbia University, the National Indoor Intercollegiate Championship is the second fall national championship event in college tennis and includes a 32-player singles draw and 20-team doubles bracket for both men and women.
