Men's Tennis Advances Three at ITA All-American Championships

TULSA, Okla. - The William & Mary men’s tennis team advanced three players in the prequalifying draw of the 2015 Saint Francis Health System ITA Men's All-American Championships on Saturday. Junior Damon Niquet and sophomores Lars de Boer and Christian Cargill tallied three-set wins to move into the third round on Sunday. The University of Tulsa is the host of the ITA All-American Championships for the 11th straight year.

Both de Boer and Cargill rallied from set deficits to advance. de Boer dropped the opening set to Arkansas’ Austin Robles, 6-2, before bouncing back with a 6-2 win in the second set over the Razorback senior. The Tribe sophomore pulled out the win with a 7-5 triumph in the third set to even his season ledger at 3-3. de Boer will face ETSU’s Robert Herrera, who upset the draw’s No. 8 seed Luis Valero of Tennessee on Saturday, at 9 a.m. ET at the Case Tennis Center.

Cargill, who is seeded No. 2 in the prequalifying draw, came back after dropping the first set to Nebraska junior Chris Schindler in a tiebreaker, 7-6 (4). The First Team All-CAA pick took the second and third sets by matching 6-2 scores for his second win of the fall campaign. Cargill meets Hawaii sophomore Felix Albert at 12:30 p.m. ET at Union High School in the third round on Sunday.

Niquet tallied his first win of the fall campaign, outlasting LSU’s Cameron Andry in three sets. The counterparts split the opening two sets by identical 7-5 scores, before the Tribe junior notched the clinching 6-4 victory in the third. Niquet faces Lucas Sanchez of Mississippi State in the third round on Sunday at 9 a.m. ET at Union High School.

Both senior Scott Huang and junior Addison Appleby dropped three-set matches in the second round of the prequalifying draw after winning the opening set. Huang took the opening set from Western Michigan’s Daniel Loebel , 6-4, but the Bronco player rallied to take the final two sets, 6-3, 6-1. Playing a No. 17-32 seeded player in UC Irvine’s Nico Mertens, Appleby took the first set, 6-3, before the First Team All-Big West player claimed the match with 6-3, 6-1 wins in the second and third sets.

The prequalifying draw of the ITA All-American Championships continues on Sunday at both the Michael Case Tennis Center and Union High School in Tulsa.
