Tribe Golf Heads to Pinehurst for Fall Finale

The William & Mary women's golf team wraps up the fall schedule this week, heading to the Pinehurst Challenge on Monday and Tuesday, Oct. 12-13.  The 20 teams in the event will play 54 holes Monday and 18 Tuesday on Pinehurt No. 1, a par-72, 5949-yard layout.

Scouting the Field
An impressive nine teams in the field of 20 this week are ranked in the Golfweek top-100, including #97 W&M and host #74 College of Charleston.  Other ranked teams including No. 17 East Carolina, No. 60 Old Dominion, No. 75 Elon, No. 77 Iowa, No. 78 Penn State, No. 79 Chattanooga, and No. 95 East Tennessee State.  Unranked teams include Nebraska, Maryland, Morehead State, North Florida, Charleston Southern, Western Carolina, Samford, High Point, UNC Greensboro, Marshall, and Illinois State.

Scouting the Tribe
W&M will be led once again by senior Alessandra Liu (Cynwyd, Pa.), who is in the midst of an all-time great season.  The two-time CAA Player of the Week and ECAC Player of the Month for September, Liu is currently ranked No. 60 in the nation by Golfweek and No. 28 by Golfstat.  She is averaging 71.44 strokes per round, and has two wins in three tournaments and a 207-1 overall record.  Liu has also shot seven rounds of par or better this season, breaking her own school record set just last season.

Also in the line-up this week is fellow senior Tina Chang (Mineola, N.Y.), who had a career-best round of 71 (-1) in the last tournament at East Carolina.  For the season, Chang is averaging a career-best 78.11 strokes per round.  Sophomore Katie Edelblut (New Hope, Pa.) has a pair of top-10 finishes to her credit and ranks second on the team at 76.11 strokes per round, a figure that is currently the fourth-best mark ever at W&M.  Junior Mia Zanghetti (Jacksonville, Fla.) is averaging 78.22 strokes per round, which includes a 70 (-2) at home, and freshman Riley Corona (Cave Creek, Ariz.) re-enters the line-up for the third time with a season average of 81.17.
