Crouse, Gemmill to play in Hockey Canada showcase
TORONTO - Two of Ryerson Rams women’s hockey’s young stars are heading to Calgary in August after being named to the U SPORTS All-Stars roster that will train and compete in the annual Hockey Canada Summer Showcase event.
Reigning OUA and U SPORTS Rookie of the Year, Erika Crouse, and teammate Brooklyn Gemmill will be part of the 21-player all-star squad made up of student-athletes from across the country.
Ryerson is one of six U SPORTS institutions to have multiple athletes named to the team, while 12 schools are represented in total. The Rams will make up half of the OUA’s representation, as four student-athletes from Ontario schools will participate.
This past season Gemmill led the Rams with 23 points (10 goals, 13 assists) which ranked her fifth in the OUA scoring race. She also added a team-high five points in the postseason. Crouse was not far behind, with 22 regular season points (11 goals, 11 assists).
“I’m very excited about the opportunity to play with some of the best female university hockey players in Canada,” said Crouse. “I’m also looking forward to sharing this experience with my teammate Brooklyn as we’ve had a lot of success as linemates and we continue to encourage and push each other to be better.”
The pair of Rams become the second and third student-athletes to represent Ryerson on the U SPORTS All-Stars roster at the Summer Showcase, following Ailish Forfar who did so in 2018.
This year marks the fourth time a team of U SPORTS All-Stars has participated in the Summer Showcase, and 2019 will see the roster play in six exhibition games. The competition includes the Canadian national women’s development team split into two squads, as well as teams from France, Russia, and Japan.
The Showcase will run from August 2-11. The U SPORTS All-Stars will open the game schedule against Russia on August 4th. All games will take place at the WinSport Canada Olympic Park in Calgary.
