MOBILE, Ala. – Led by sophomores Emma Berlin and Maria Blasco who each shot even-par rounds of 72 on Saturday, the Georgia State women’s golf team opened the USA Intercollegiate with a 6-over 294 to stand in a tie for eighth-place on Saturday.
Berlin and Blasco are both tied for 16th place following the rounds of 72. Berlin made five birdies in round one, while Blasco made three.
The Panthers stand in the middle of a 16-team field at the Magnolia Grove Crossings Golf Course.
“Today’s round didn’t come easy, but the ladies really fought to keep themselves in the game,” head coach Jessica Steward said. “We have a lot to be proud of, like our strong start and the 15 birdies we made all together. Emma and Maria had excellent rounds and laid a solid foundation for our team. We’re only three shots away from fourth place and I know everyone is excited to learn from today and come back with vengeance on Sunday.”
Freshman Jenny Marston added a 2-over 74 for the Panthers to sit in a tie for 30th with 36 holes to play. Senior Harmanprit Kaur is tied for 53rd following an opening-round 4-over 76, while junior Chloe Howard rounded out the line-up with an 8-over 80 and is tied for 83rd.
UAB leads the 16-team field at 3-under par following a 285, while North Florida is in second-place at even par. Houston Baptist is in third-place at 1-over par, while Troy and Western Kentucky are tied for fourth-place at 3-over par.
UAB’s Tia Teiniketo stands as the individual leader at 5-under par following a 67. Western Kentucky’s Sarah Arnold and Troy’s Anna Claire Little are tied for second-place at 4-under par. ULM’s Jahaanvie Walia, South Alabama’s Siti Shaari, and Houston Baptist’s Sara Zrnikova are tied for fourth-place at 3-under par.
Georgia State will be paired with Murray State and UAB for Round 2 beginning at 9:09 a.m. ET off Hole No. 1, on Sunday.
