MIAMI- Georgia State women’s tennis completed their first tournament of the fall schedule at the Miami Fall Invitational this weekend. The heavy rains delayed competition Friday night and the continual downpours canceled the second day of competition. Play resumed outside of draws on Sunday.

Captain Andreea Stanescu and freshman Alexia Alvarez both picked up two wins in singles matches. Overall the Panthers went 9-12 in singles play.

Eva Chivu and Angel Carney picked up the first win in doubles action for the Panthers on Friday. The sophomore and freshman pair split the weekend, dropping their second match on Sunday. The duo of Aleksandra Stromova and Stanescu fell to host Miami on Friday, but bounced back with a win against FAU on Sunday.

“It was a great opportunity to see the five freshman compete in a college environment against high level opponents,” said head coach Alex Leatu. “Our captain, Andreea, has done a phenomenal job leading this young team. It showed this weekend. I am really excited to see how we can build on this weekend in our next tournament.”

Coach Leatu’s team will travel to North Carolina for the UNC Charlotte 49er Invite. The tournament will take place Oct. 11-13 at the Halton-Wagner Tennis Complex.
