PEACHTREE CITY-Sixth seeded Georgia State women’s tennis defeated the number three seed Coastal Carolina 4-1 Thursday Morning in the quarterfinal round of the Sun Belt Tournament. The Panthers were boosted by singles wins from Damira Muminović, Andreea Stanescu, Anastasia Grosheva, and Lara Vovk to advance to Friday’s semifinal.

Daniela Ramirez and Eva Chivu would open the match with a 6-3 doubles win on court one. The Panthers would fall by the same score on court three, and lose 7-5 in a tight set on court two to surrender the doubles point and give Coastal Carolina a 1-0 advantage heading into singles play.

The lead would not last long as Andreea Stanescu quickly tied the match with a 6-1, 6-0 straight set win in singles flight five. Second-Team All-Sun Belt selection Damira Muminović gave GSU the lead with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Sun Belt Player to Watch Somer Dalla-Bona 6-3, 6-3.

Anastasia Grosheva would win 6-4, 6-4 on singles court six giving the Panthers a 3-1 lead just moments before Lara Vovk would clinch the match, winning on court four. Vovk outlasted her opponent 7-6 in the first set before cruising to a 6-2 second set win.

Chivu and Ramirez both won their opening sets, but their matches were left unfinished as the Panthers clinched on the bottom four courts. “We came out with a tremendous amount of energy after dropping the doubles point,” said coach Alex Leatu. “The energy is contagious and I am proud of how we brought it on courts one through six this morning, we will need it to carry us through the rest of the weekend.”

GSU will match up against the number two seed South Alabama Friday in the semifinals, as the Jaguars bested in-state rival Troy in Thursday’s opening round. The two teams are familiar with one another as the Panthers defeated South Alabama in the Sun Belt Championship last April to advance to the NCAA Tournament. More recently, GSU defeated South Alabama 4-2 this past Sunday in the teams’ regular season finale.

The teams will meet tomorrow at 9:00 a.m. at the Peachtree City Tennis Complex. The match will be available to stream live on ESPN+.
