The Georgia State women’s tennis team participated in the ITA Regional Championship in Tallahassee this weekend. This tournament marked the last of three fall tournaments for the Panthers this season.
Eva Chivu impressed by advancing to the round of 16 in the singles main draw, outlasting FIU’s Mariana Alcaide 6-2, 6-7(3), 6-1 in the round of 32.
“Eva has the ability to compete with and beat players at the highest level. She proved that this weekend,” said head coach Alex Leatu.
Damira Muminović also had a noteworthy outing, making it to the round of 32 before falling to UGA’s Lea Ma. Angel Carney and Aleksandra Stromova, two newcomers, both defeated their opponents in qualifying to advance to the main draw.
In doubles play the duo of Alexia Alvarez and Muminović won their first match 8-4, but fell later in the day to a pair from UCF.
“This weekend was a great experience for the whole team. Definitely on the right track developmentally. Now, we will continue to work on preparing for January.” said Leatu.
Georgia State will start their spring slate with a trip to Baylor in January. For more news and notes on Georgia State women’s tennis follow @GSUWTennis on Instagram and Twitter.
