Rams look to stay hot in Sunday clash with Toronto

By Jessica Pincente

TORONTO — The Ryerson Rams women’s soccer team will look to keep their three-game winning streak alive this weekend as they prepare to face their closest rivals in the Toronto Varsity Blues.

The Rams are coming off an undefeated weekend homestand after powering their way to a 2-1 win over the Trent Excalibur on Friday and taking a 3-0 victory over the Ontario Tech Ridgebacks on Sunday.  Last weekend’s back-to-back wins see the Rams jump to the third spot in the OUA East as the team now boasts a 4-2 record on the year.

The Rams’ recent streak of success is their longest since October 2015. The team will look to continue their winning ways this weekend as they travel across town to take on the Toronto Varsity Blues on Sunday, September 22.

Toronto has achieved mix results thus far this season, currently holding a 2-2-2 record with wins against Ontario Tech and RMC. Most impressively, though, was their 1-1 draw against the No. 1 Ottawa Gee-Gees on September 7.

Toronto’s biggest strength lies in the offensive abilities of Miranda Badovinac (Burlington, Ont.) and Jenny Wolever (Toronto, Ont.). Badovinac has contributed five goals in six games this year while Queen’s transfer Wolever has put up a point in each of her last three matches. The two combine to make a threatening offensive option in Toronto’s bolstered lineup.

Alternatively, several Rams have seen success of their own over the past three weeks. Brooke Pearson (Pickering, Ont.) has scored a goal in each of her last two games while BreAnah Webster (Pickering, Ont.) leads the Rams with four points on the year.

The Varsity Blues tend to front their strongest attacking efforts in the opening 45 minutes of a game; as such, maintaining offensive pressure throughout the full 90 minutes while staying strong on the back end will help give Ryerson the best chance to defeat their cross-town rivals.

A win against Toronto on Sunday would see the Rams establish a new program record for the longest winning streak, a feat that this year’s team is certainly capable of achieving.

The two teams will kick off at 1:00 p.m. at Varsity Stadium on Sunday in Toronto. Catch the game live on OUA.tv or follow the Rams on Twitter (@RyersonRams) for in-game updates.
