Rams send off seniors with strong showing over Nipissing

By Jessica Pincente

TORONTO — In their final match of the season, the Ryerson Rams and the Nipissing Lakers played to a 1-1 draw on Sunday afternoon at Downsview Park.

Nipissing’s Andrea Young (Ottawa, Ont.) opened up the scoring for her team late in the first half. Ryerson’s defensive efforts minimized the Lakers’ chances through the remainder of the game, and it wasn’t until the 62nd minute that the Rams would tie it up.

Christiana Daniel (Mississauga, Ont.) netted her second goal of the year midway through the second half, leveling the playing field with 28 minutes left in the match.

Joycelynn [Brarr] set up the goal off a corner kick and it was an easy tap-in for me,” says Daniel, recounting her goal. “Today wasn't the way we wanted to end our season but we're excited to get back at it again next year and prove our worth.“

Neither team earned the advantage in the remaining minutes of the game, and the match ended in a 1-1 draw.

Rams head coach Natalie Bukovic says she was extremely proud of the team's performance today.

“The last 45 minutes of that game gave us a glimpse of how talented we really are," says Bukovec. "We always seem to shine in the face of adversity and I'm thrilled with the team's effort today."

The game was of particular importance to two of the team’s graduating seniors. Defender Gillian Rossi (Mississauga, Ont.) and forward Alessia Carvalho (Newmarket, Ont.) capped off their four-year careers at Ryerson with a fantastic match against the Lakers.

Carvalho has played in 52 games in her time with the Rams, accumulating nine goals and generating countless opportunities for herself and her teammates with her speed and creativity. Rossi has been a leader and role model for the women’s soccer program throughout her career, playing a pivotal role in the Ryerson community and beyond.

Both Rossi and Carvalho will be greatly missed next season.

Though the season may not have panned out as intended, the Rams always gave their best efforts game-in and game-out. The team walked off the field with their heads held high, confident in their abilities and ready to start preparations for next season.
