Rams basketball set to return on October 24
TORONTO — The Ryerson Rams men’s and women’s basketball teams have officially released their 2019-20 regular season schedule, and the teams are set to open up their season at home against the York Lions on October 24, 2019.
Under the leadership of newly-promoted head coach Borko Popic, the men’s team will look to extend their historic provincial and national medal run. The Rams have competed for an OUA banner in four consecutive seasons and have gone on to earn a national medal in each of their last five appearances at the U SPORTS Final 8 National Championship. This year, the team is hoping to build on their past successes amidst the program’s fresh start.
On the women’s side, the Rams will look to build on the success of their 2019 U SPORTS Final 8 campaign. The team lost their quarterfinal matchup to the no. 1 Laval Rouge et Or but went on to take two commanding victories and eventually earned a fifth-place finish after coming into the tournament ranked eighth. The Rams will look to carry that season-ending momentum into the 2019-20 season.
Looking ahead, the 2020 U SPORTS Men’s and Women’s Final 8 tournaments will be co-hosted by Carleton University and the University of Ottawa. For the first time ever, both tournaments will be held in the nation’s capital from March 5-8, 2020, splitting time between TD Place and the Raven’s Nest. The Final 8 tournament will return to its original format in 2021.
The co-championship format isn’t the only change taking effect in the OUA this year. The Ontario Tech Ridgebacks will officially house a men’s and women’s basketball team, and, with a new addition to the league comes a conference realignment. The Rams will now share a division with Brock, Lakehead, McMaster, Toronto, and York, playing two games against divisional opponents and a single game against teams in different groups.
This year, postseason contention will be based on winning percentage. The top three teams in each division will qualify for the playoffs, and the next three teams with the highest winning percentage from across the league will also qualify. Similar to previous seasons, the OUA’s top four teams will receive a bye through the first round of the playoffs.
Additionally, the teams will each play 22 regular season games instead of the previous 23. The full women’s schedule can be found here and the men’s can be found here.
OCTOBER 24, 2019 | RYERSON RAMS VS. YORK LIONS, HOME OPENER
The Rams will host their cross-town rivals in the York Lions on Thursday, October 24 in their 2019-20 home and season opener.
The women split their season series against York last year and will be looking to avenge their most recent loss to the Lions. The last time these two teams met, Ryerson fell victim to a buzzer-beating three-point shot by York’s Lauren Golding (Windsor, Ont.) that gave her team a three-point win over the Rams. This time around, the Rams will hope to make a statement with a solid season-opening victory.
The men, on the other hand, haven’t lost a game to York since 2011. The team will look to keep their streak alive and kick off their 2019-20 campaign on a positive note.
No matter the sport, it’s always a fun atmosphere whenever and wherever Ryerson and York meet. Tip-off is set for 6:00 PM and 8:00 PM.
NOVEMBER 27, 2019 | RYERSON RAMS VS. TORONTO VARSITY BLUES, BATTLE FOR THE 6IX
The Rams will host their closest opponents in the Toronto Varsity Blues on November 27, 2019. Another historic rivalry will be on display as the Rams look to sweep this year’s Battle for the 6ix for a second consecutive year.
The teams will tip off at 6:00 PM.
JANUARY 25, 2020 | RYERSON RAMS VS. CARLETON RAVENS, OUA’S FINEST
Be sure to circle this one on your calendars, Rams fans. It’s the matchup you’ve all been waiting for.
Two of the country’s top basketball programs will face off for the first and only time during the regular season on Ryerson’s Coca-Cola Court on Saturday, January 25. The men’s teams exchanged first and second-place rankings over the course of last season, but it was the Ravens that ultimately emerged with an edge on both the men’s and women’s sides.
Last year’s matchup sold out one day prior to the game, so be sure to grab your tickets early. As always, Ryerson students receive free admission with a valid OneCard.
The games will begin at 6:00 PM.
JANUARY 29, 2020 | RYERSON RAMS VS. MCMASTER MARAUDERS, RIVALRY GAME
The last time the McMaster Marauders’ women’s basketball team were in the Mattamy Athletic Centre, they were crowned national champions. January 29, 2020, sees the Marauders make their triumphant return to Ryerson, this time taking on the Rams on the Coca-Cola Court. Ryerson beat McMaster on two occasions last season, but a storybook ending to the Marauders’ postseason campaign will likely result in an intense meeting in 2020.
The men have a historical edge heading into the matchup, but a new year presents a new challenge to both teams on all ends of the floor.
As always, tip-off is set for 6:00 PM.
