Rams volleyball to open 2019-20 season at home

By Jessica Pincente

TORONTO — Ryerson’s women’s and men’s volleyball teams have officially released their 2019-20 regular season schedule and are set to open their campaigns at home on October 25 and October 26, respectively.

Coming off their second straight national finals appearance, the women will look to hit the ground running next season. The team played nearly flawless volleyball for a vast majority of the 2018-19 season and took home both a provincial and national silver medal.

On the other hand, the men will look to make their mark on the OUA this year after a quarterfinal appearance in last year’s playoffs. Led by OUA East Player of the Year and U SPORTS Rookie of the Year Xander Ketrzynski (Toronto, Ont.), the Rams will house a more experienced team this season and are hoping to make a strong postseason run.

The women will play their home and season opener against the Lakehead Thunderwolves on Friday, October 25 on the Coca-Cola Court at 6:00 PM, and the men are set to open their season the following day against the Toronto Varsity Blues.  More details on October 26th’s game against Toronto can be found below.

Both the men’s and women’s teams will look to qualify for the 2020 U SPORTS Volleyball National Championships from March 12-15, 2020. The women’s tournament will be hosted by the four-time national champion Calgary Dinos, while the men’s will return to the University of Manitoba for the first time since 1976.

Key Dates

Saturday, October 26, 2019 | Ryerson Rams vs. Toronto Varsity Blues, Men’s Home Opener

Both Rams teams will hit the Coca-Cola Court at the Mattamy Athletic Centre on October 26 against the Toronto Varsity Blues.

The women are set to play their second match of the year against Toronto after hosting Lakehead in their season opener on October 25. The men, however, will play their season-opening match against the Varsity Blues.

Both the men and the women split last year’s season series against Toronto, and this year’s regular season results could go either way. No matter the sport or the venue, though, the Battle for the 6ix is one of the most intense rivalries Ryerson has to offer.

First serve is set for 6:00 PM.

Friday, January 10, 2020 | Ryerson Rams vs. Western Mustangs, Clash of the Rivals

The Rams will host the Western Mustangs on Friday, January 10 to kick off their second-semester campaign.

Both Mustangs teams finished second in the OUA West last year, and both managed to take the win in their regular season meetings with the Rams. The women met Western yet again in the OUA semi-final, but this time, it was Ryerson who walked away with a 3-1 victory.

Last season’s dramatic results are making this year’s regular season clash one of the Rams’ most highly anticipated matchups of the season.

First serve flies at 6:00 PM on the Coca-Cola Court.

Sunday, February 23, 2020 | Ryerson Rams vs. Queen’s Gaels, Senior Night

The Rams will wrap up their 2019-20 regular season at home against the Queen’s Gaels on February 23, 2020.

The Gaels’ men’s team are coming off an OUA championship. The team finished first in the OUA East last year, just six points ahead of the Rams, and went on to earn four straight wins to capture their first Forsyth Cup since 2012. The women, on the other hand, fell out of postseason contention after a 3-1 loss to Western in the OUA quarterfinal.

The last game of the regular season also marks Senior Day, where both teams will celebrate the careers of their graduating seniors.

Check back to our website later in the summer to find out the match’s official start time.
