Rams draw Ridgebacks in tight match

By Joe Mastromatteo

TORONTO - The undefeated Ryerson Rams failed to keep their win streak alive on Sunday after drawing with the Ontario Tech Ridgebacks 3-3 on home field.

The 5-0-1 Rams fought hard against the Ridgebacks, with a 1-1 tied game until the 62nd minute. After two skillful goals from captain Abdallah El-Chanti (Toronto, Ont.), Ryerson was on the verge of pulling away. However, two unanswered goals in the 78th and 87th minute from Ontario Tech forced the draw.

The Ridgebacks still have yet to win a game after drawing four matches and losing once. Ryerson held the lead for parts of Sunday’s match and still have not lost a game despite giving up their led and drawing against Ontario Tech.

Ryerson put on offensive pressure early on. In the 30th minute, new recruit Andrew Barrett (Toronto, Ont.) capitalized on a loose ball from a scrum at the edge of the box to make it 1-0.

The Ridgebacks answered just four minutes later when Chris Campoli (Woodbridge, Ont.) headed in a tying ball from in close. The score remained 1-1 at the half.

In the second half, the Rams were all over the the Ridgebacks. Abdallah El-Chanti finished off a deflected free kick from Arya Hemati (Vaughan, Ont.) in the 62nd minute for his second of the season. El-Chanti did it again ten minutes later in the 72nd minute. The midfielder made a highlight-worthy run, dribbling past the Ridgeback defensive line and finishing from the edge of the box.

Unfortunately, Ryerson’s production ended there. An unfortunate failed clearing from keeper Ali Ghazanfari (Stouffville, Ont.) led to Fadi Salback (Bowmanville, Ont.) cutting the Rams’ lead to one in the 78th minute. Chris Campoli’s second of the game completed the Ridgebacks' comeback in the 87th minute and the game eventually concluded 3-3.

“I think maybe we underestimated the opponent a little bit,” said head coach Filip Prostran post-game. “Three-three draw was a tough one to swallow for us but two good teams and that’s the way it goes sometimes.”

The Rams are back in action on Friday night on the road for a rematch against Ontario Tech.
