Cougarettes Place Sixth at UDA Nationals
CHARLESTON, S.C. – The College of Charleston dance team – the Cougarettes – are back on campus this week with their heads high, having advanced to the finals of last week’s Universal Dance Association (UDA) College Nationals and finishing as the sixth-best team in the country in the Hip Hop Division.
The Cougarettes entered Saturday’s UDA College Nationals Semifinals with the goal of advancing to Sunday’s Finals, a task that’d require them to eclipse their best-ever finish and climb into the top six – the Cougarettes’ previous best finish at Nationals was No. 8.
The competition’s judges applauded Charleston for the difficulty involved in the routine, one which the Cougarettes heralded as their toughest ever heading into the competition.

The Cougarettes represented The College well, bringing high energy to the routine and using the entire stage area, much to the liking of the crowd and judges alike.
The squad didn’t mishandle any of their numerous partner-reliant or challenging flip tricks, and when the finalists were announced, the 12-member competition squad and their supporters couldn’t have been more ecstatic to hear “College of Charleston” including amongst the nation’s best.
Based on the judges’ feedback, the team tweaked the routine and its choreography before Sunday’s finals, but the Cougarettes still found themselves placed in sixth, though the degrees of separation were razor thin.
Even though the dancers achieved their goals of improving upon last year’s results and reaching the finals, the Cougarettes are not content. They now have their sights set on next year’s competition, and after learning from what this year’s winners accomplished, there’s no ceiling for the College of Charleston Cougarettes.
The Cougarettes who competed at UDA Nationals were Caroline Byrd, Melissa Whiting, Taylor Schuman, Meagan Hunter, Mary Bouyea, Allie Unterreiner, Tori Kabernagel, Meg Williamson, Mattie Rodgers, Leann Boddie, Laura Kuroki, and Jackie Reiner.
Other integral members of the squad who didn’t compete but were there in support are Cassandra Barber, Taylor Newton, Kaelyn Jiran, Dana Van Houten, Ashton Hipkins, and Kristina Rimkute.
Once available, videos of the routines will be uploaded at the following UDA sponsored page:
