Cross Country Resumes at JMU Invitational

NEW MARKET, Va. – After opening the season strong two weeks ago at the Liberty Invite, the VMI cross country teams resume competition Saturday morning at the JMU Invitational hosted by James Madison in New Market, Virginia.


The men will run an 8K race at 10 a.m. followed by a women’s 6K race at 10:45 a.m. at the New Market Battlefield, a site well-known to VMI cadets with its historical significance to the Institute.


Two weeks ago in Lynchburg, Jahanzib Shahbaz led the men in the 4K with a time of 10th-place time of 12:57 followed by Gavin Jenkins in 13:11. Ian Irizarry Negron, Carlos Fernandes and Walt Kitson also performed well on the men’s side with top-five finishes for the team. Team scores were not kept.


On the women’s side, senior Logan Luckett and junior Anna Armfield led the Keydets in the 4K race in 16:33, tying for 22nd place in the race. Junior Sara Belamarich competed well, arriving in 29th place in 17:55.
