Question of the Week for May 13, 2005

I've read that UCSD has been "grandfathered" into the Division II requirement for offering athletic scholarships. Is there a chance that clause could be changed?

The NCAA has a process that allows UCSD to request a waiver each year if we continue with our philosophy of not offering athletic scholarships.

It is my understanding that we will be granted this waiver by the NCAA Membership Committee each year. However, there will likely be legislation proposed that would allow Division II institutions with large, broad-based programs (18 or more) to be exempt from the scholarship requirement.

Should this legislation be presented and passed, UCSD would no longer have to request a waiver because we offer 23 sports.
