Who was George Mason?

 George MasonGeorge Mason IV (December 11, 1725 – October 7, 1792) was an American Patriot, statesman and a delegate from Virginia to the U.S. Constitutional Convention. Along with James Madison, he is called the "Father of the United States Bill of Rights.   For these reasons he is considered one of the "Founding Fathers" of the United States.

  • In December 1791, the U.S. Bill of Rights was ratified, putting to rest George Mason's concerns about the rights of the individual, and he died less than a year later.
  • George Mason was one of the framers of our Constitution, even though he didn’t sign it.
  • George Mason is the largest state school in Virginia. Its enrollment is about 50 percent larger in than the University of Virginia's.
  • Mason offers over 80 majors, as well as hundreds of concentrations and minors.
  • George Mason University—Where Innovation Is Tradition.
  • In recent years, George Mason faculty have twice won the Nobel Prize in Economics.
  • Also, in 1979, the university moved all of its athletic programs to NCAA Division I
  • Also, in 2008 Mason changed its mascot from the "Gunston" animal to the "Patriot"
  • George Mason has two NCAA Division I National Championship to its credit; 1985 Women's Soccer and 1996 Men's Indoor Track & Field.

The Green Machine

The Green Machine

In 2006, "The Green Machine" won the Battle of the Bands at the NCAA Final Four Tournament as the only student-led group, competing against the other schools involved (UCLA, LSU, and Florida). A panel of judges based the winners of each portion of the competition on fan participation, overall band sound, and audience response. "The Green Machine" has also performed for a wide variety of audiences and events on a national level, including Hardball with Chris Matthews, The Today Show, the Marine Corps Marathon, local news and radio programs, various sporting events including basketball and football, an official rally for a presidential candidate, national charity events, and minor league baseball games. In addition to media appearances, the band has also been featured in printed articles, including the Washington Post, Fairfax County Times, South County Chronicle, Mason Gazette, Mason Milestones, and Mason Nation.


Patriot Platoon

Behind the east basket at the Patriot Center, one of the country's most dedicated and fervent student support groups greets visiting teams with a sea of gold and provides one of the best home court advantages around. They arrive before the doors are opened to the general public, cheer and support the Patriots before, during and after each game.

2006 Final Four

Video: GMU Knocks Off Top Seeded Connecticut:

George Mason University was catapulted into the national spotlight in March 2006, when its men's basketball team advanced to the Final Four of the NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament by defeating the Michigan State Spartans, the defending champion North Carolina Tar Heels, the Wichita State Shockers, and the top-seeded Connecticut Huskies. Their "Cinderella" journey ended in the Final Four with a loss to the eventual tournament champion Florida Gators by a score of 73–58. As a result of the team's success in the tournament, the Patriots were ranked 8th in the final ESPN/USA Today Poll.
