LEXINGTON, Va. - After training all summer for the new season, the VMI cross country teams open the 2019 campaign tonight in Lynchburg, Virginia, to compete at the Liberty Challenge.
The women's team will run a 4K slated for 5 p.m. while the men's team will compete in a 4K race at 5:30 p.m.
The meet, which will not be team-scored, will feature competitors from Liberty, Lynchburg, Virginia and VMI.
The start and finish lines are located adjacent to the Liberty Indoor Track Complex (1531 Liberty Mountain Drive, Lynchburg, VA 24502). Ample parking is available next to the indoor track. Parking and admission are free, and no credentials are necessary for anyone planning to shoot photo/video.
The VMI men are coming off a 2018 season in which they placed fifth at the SoCon Championship led by Gavin Jenkins' 32nd-place mark to earn All-Freshman honors. Returning upperclassmen Justin Adams and Andre Jordan also scored team points in the race. Jahanzib Shahbaz will make an immediate contribution to the team after sitting out the 2018 cross country season.
The VMI women are led by junior Anna Armfield and senior Logan Luckett who helped lead the Keydets to an 8th-place finish at last year's SoCon race. Sara Belamarich, Olivia Smoot and Skylar Pierce also return with significant collegiate running experience.
