RICHMOND, Va. – The College of Charleston men’s tennis team’s Juan Estevarena, Rodrigo Encinas, and Zack Lewis have earned All-CAA honors for their efforts on and off the court in 2016.

Sophomore Juan Estevarena was named to the All-CAA First team for his efforts in singles play in his first season as a Cougar. He put together a record of 15-5 in the No. 1 singles flight, and 16-5 overall on the season.

“I am happy for Juan being selected to the first team, he has done a great job this year for us in the top position.  He has matured over the season and deserves to be recognized among his peers for the way he competes day in and day out at matches.” Head coach Jay Bruner said.

Estevarena, and his doubles partner, Rodrigo Encinas, were also named to the doubles All-CAA First Team as well. As a tandem, they won 15 of their 20 matches in the No. 1 doubles flight, and were ranked as high as No. 66 in the nation as a unit.

“In doubles, he and Rodrigo have been super consistent and found a way to get into every match.  They have been fun to watch and when they are both focused, they could beat anyone.” Bruner added.

The honors did not stop there for Encinas, as he also earned a spot on the All-CAA Second team. Playing everywhere from No. 2, 3, 4, and No. 5 singles, the junior accrued a record 13-7 in singles play, and won eight singles matches consecutively from March 6 to March 25. This is the second and third time in his career at the College that Encinas has received All-CAA accolades.

“Rodrigo has worked hard all season and his selection to the All-CAA team is an honor he deserves.  He has been a great example on court this spring and really was the spark we needed in a lot of tight matches.”  Bruner said.

Senior Zack Lewis also picked up an honor as well, as he was named to the CAA All-Academic team.  Lewis won 13 matches in singles play, and 12 more in doubles play on the season in addition to being a pillar academically for The College. Lewis will end his senior season with a career record of 63-20 in singles play and 36-25 in doubles. This is the second time that Lewis has garnered All-Conference honors, as he was named to the All-Southern Conference Second team, and the All-Freshman team back in 2013.

“Zack has continued to excel on the court as a senior collecting a huge number of wins over 4 years, but has more importantly been a leader in the classroom and library.  For him to receive this academic award speaks a lot about his dual focus for his career, he is a great example of a student-athlete. “ Bruner said.

Next on the schedule for the Cougars is a trip to Elon, N.C. for the CAA Championship tournament. They have been named the No. 2 seed, and will face No. 7 seeded James Madison at 1 p.m. on Friday, April 22.
