Uchebo Doubles Up But 49ers Fall At North Texas

Joseph Uchebo recorded his 16th double-double of the season, but the Charlotte 49ers (13-18, C-USA: 9-9) lost to North Texas (12-19, C-USA: 7-11), 80-77, on the road in the regular-season finale. Charlotte finished with a 9-9 mark in Conference USA play, earning the seventh seed at next week's league championship.
Joseph Uchebo scored 23 points with 19 rebounds. Braxton Ogbueze with his 21st double-figure scoring game with 14 points. Anthony Vanhook recorded his eighth double-figure scoring game off the bench with 14 points. Curran Scott tallied his 16th double-figure scoring game with 10 points.
Eric Katenda led four North Texas players in double-figures with 20 points.
Charlotte began the game by scoring eight of the first 10 points taking an 8-2 lead when Curran Scott knocked down a three with 16:58 on the clock. Scott scored five points during the 49ers early run.
Charlotte maintained the lead for the next 10 minutes pushing their lead to a first half high seven, 22-15, when Jon Davis knocked down a jumper with 8:53 on the clock.
Then, North Texas went on a 9-2 run over the next two and half minutes tying the score at 24 when Deckie Johnson connected on a three at the 6:02 mark.
The teams exchanged the lead several times with a couple of ties over the next four minutes. Then, with the game tied at 32, Uchebo scored inside and Anthony Vanhook connected on two free throws giving the 49ers a 36-32 lead with 46 seconds on the clock. However, North Texas scored five of the half’s final seven points cutting Charlotte’s halftime lead to 38-37.
North Texas began the second half on an 8-2 run taking a 45-40 lead when J-Mychal Reese scored with 17:53 on the clock.
Charlotte answered the run with their own 6-0 run capped off by an Uchebo layup giving the 49ers a 46-45 lead with 15:49 on the clock.
The lead exchanged hands several times with a couple of ties over the next few minutes until Johnson connected on a three for North Texas giving the Mean Green the lead for good, 53-49 with 14:34 on the clock.
North Texas pushed their lead to seven points, 60-53, when Katenda completed a three-point play with 12:16 on the clock.
Charlotte cut North Texas lead to one point on several occasions but they were never able to regain the lead.
Charlotte returns to action in the second round of the Conference USA Tournament in Birmingham, Alabama, Wednesday, March 9.
