DURHAM, N.C. – A couple of first half goals paired with a late score in the second half propelled the eighth-ranked Duke women’s soccer team to a 3-0 victory Monday evening at Koskinen Stadium in the Blue Devils’ exhibition opener against the Campbell Fighting Camels.

“I thought it was a good start,” said head coach Robbie Church. “We’ve had less than a week of preseason, but I thought our shape was really good. We had a plan of what we wanted to do and we tried to execute that plan. We didn’t always execute it, but you could see how we were trying to build and play. They left us a lot to work on, both on the offensive and defensive side, so that’s good. Overall, I’m happy with it.”

The Blue Devils broke into the scoring column in the 30th minute of action thanks to a goal from freshman Sophie Jones. Junior Lily Nabet delivered a ball to Jones, who took a shot from the top of the box for the game’s first score. Duke wasted little time to add a second goal of the half as sophomore Marykate McGuire scored on an assist from junior Taylor Mitchell in the 40th minute to make it 2-0 in favor of the home team heading into the half.

Duke added a late insurance goal in the second period, as McGuire struck for her second score of the evening, this time on an assist from freshman Julia Hannon in the 76th minute.

The Blue Devils finished with 18 shots, attempting nine in each half, while the Camels closed out the contest with three shots. Duke also held the advantage in corners, 12-0, including 10 in the first half of play.

The Blue Devils will wrap up the preseason in Athens, Ga., with a matchup against the Georgia Bulldogs Friday, Aug. 16. The 2019 season officially begins Thursday, Aug. 22, as Duke opens the 2019 Carolina Nike Tournament against La Salle at 4 p.m.
