OGDEN, Utah—Three Idaho Vandals earned post-season recognition from the Big Sky on Friday. The conference coaches voted Odon Barta and Felipe Fonseca First Team All-Conference. Mark Kovacs was a Second Team selection.
Barta and Fonseca claimed First Team honors for the second consecutive season. Kovacs was an Honorable Mention in 2015.
"I think the recognition is a great sign of things to come," head coach Abid Akbar said. "The best part is that two of the guys, Felipe and Mark, will be back next year. I think that is the most exciting thing. Odon did a great service for the Vandals. He was a great asset for us."
Barta, the 2015 Big Sky Player of the Year, finished the spring 14-9 overall. He was 7-4 inside of the conference. The Budapest, Hungary native, spent a majority of the season as Idaho’s No. 1 singles player. He was 13-7 in the top position for Idaho. The senior will end his career with 61 singles victories.
Fonseca continued to excel in his sophomore season. The Curitiba, Brazil native, finished 14-7 in dual matches. He provided a solid No. 2 for the Vandals, recording a 12-5 record from the second position. Fonseca finished 10-1 in conference play, falling early in the season at Northern Colorado. He was voted Big Sky Player of the Week (April 19), helping hand Weber State its only loss in Big Sky play.
Kovacs tied for the team lead with 15 victories this spring. He was 15-4, posting a 10-1 conference record. The sophomore from Budapest posted a 2-0 record during the Big Sky Tournament in No. 3 singles. He closed the 2016 season as one of the hottest players in the conference, winning his last six-matches.
