Baseball Adds Jackson Lumen Christi's Zach Mehelich
KALAMAZOO, Mich. – Zach Mehelich, a right-handed pitcher from Jackson Lumen Christi in Jackson, Mich., added his name to the 2017 recruiting class of the Mid-American Conference (MAC) Tournament Champion Western Michigan baseball team.
“Zach is a big and strong individual with good arm strength,” WMU head coach Billy Gernon said. “He has the potential to advance and improve rapidly and could impact our pitching staff earlier than later.”
Mehelich finished his senior season with an 8-2 record and an impressive 1.33 ERA. He allowed just 12 runs in 63.0 innings pitched and struck out 97 batters. He was named the Jackson Citizen Patriot Baseball Player of the Year in 2016 and 2015, First Team All-District, First Team All-Conference, First Team All-Region and Second Team All-State. As a junior, he was named a First Team All-State honoree. Mehelich was also a force on offense, hitting .479 with a .537 on-base percentage and an OPS of 1.247. He drove in 38 runs in 37 games and finished with 24 runs.
He led Jackson Lumen Christi back to the State Semifinals in 2016 after leading his squad to a State Championship in 2015. It was the first State Championship since 1978 and the first back-to-back Regional Championships in school history. Mehelich picked up three wins in the post season in districts, regionals and State Quarterfinals.
