Men's Soccer Names 2019 Captains
WORCESTER, Mass. – Holy Cross men’s soccer head coach Marco Koolman has named the Crusaders’ captains for the 2019 season. Senior midfielder Rory Birse, senior defender Liam Butler, and junior midfielder Max Krause will serve as the team’s leaders in the 2019 season.
Koolman stated, “I am looking forward to have these quality individuals at the helm as our three captains for next season.”
Birse, a midfielder, has played in 36 games for the Crusaders and started 21. In his career, he has tallied two assists and been a mainstay in the Holy Cross midfield.
“Rory shows his talent through his determination and drive on the field,” said Koolman about Birse. “He is a fierce competitor, who has the ability to set the tone for his teammates. He motivates on and off the field and exemplifies the description of a team leader.”
Butler, a defender, broke into the Crusaders’ back line, starting 12 of the 14 games he played in the 2018 season. The defender also leads the team in the classroom as a two-time Patriot League Academic Honor Roll member. In 2018, Butler recorded the highest GPA on the team as an accounting major.
“Liam is a steady defender who leads by example on the field,” said Koolman about Butler. “His extraordinary work ethic and determination keeps his teammates on their toes at all times. In the classroom, Liam is no different. His team-leading GPA reflects on his commitment to being a true student-athlete.”
Krause, a midfielder, has played in 32 games and started 21 in two seasons. Krause recorded both goals in Holy Cross’ 2-1 victory over #16 UMass Lowell in the 2018 season. The midfielder also set a Patriot League single-game record with two assists in the 2017 Patriot League Quarterfinal.
“Max's passion and knowledge of the game is reflected through his performance and communication on the field,” said Koolman about Krause. “Max is a team player who shows knows how to motivate his teammates. He is an approachable leader who finds time for anyone at any time.”
