PHILADELPHIA – Ranked 10th in the region, the Saint Joseph’s men’s cross country squad will head to the 2019 NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional Championship this Friday, November 15. The 10k race is slated to begin at noon at Lehigh University's Goodman Campus in Bethlehem, Pa.
The top two teams and top four individuals receive automatic qualification for the 2019 NCAA Cross Country Championship, to be held on Saturday, November 23 at the Lavern Gibson Championship Course in Terra Haute, Ind. Overall, the top two teams from each region, plus 13 at-large teams from across the country, will qualify for the national championship. After teams have been determined, 38 additional individuals will be selected to compete at nationals. A complete breakdown of the qualification process can be found by clicking here.
Saint Joseph's seven runners to represent the Hawks at the 2019 Mid-Atlantic Regional Championship were selected primarily from SJU’s 2019 Atlantic 10 Championship roster: senior captain Zach Michon (A-10 champion), junior Matthew Scarpill (9th), freshman Colin Kane (21st), sophomore George Steinhoff (31st), junior Bobby Hastie (37th), and senior Colin Gallagher (56th) will race from the league roster while senior Josh Clark has earned himself a spot on the regional roster as senior captain John Walker will be unavailable to race. Sophomore Ben Bunch will serve as the alternate.
Saint Joseph’s finished 10th in a field of 24 teams at the 2018 NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional Championship last fall. Michon returns as SJU's top runner from that meet (43rd) while Scarpill (98th) and Hastie (120th) finished as SJU's #6 and #7 runners as SJU's #2, #3, #4, and #5 scorers were seniors.
Michon ('17, '18) and Clark ('16, '17) lead SJU with two regional meets under their belts while Hastie and Scarpill made their regional debuts last year and Kane, Steinhoff, and Gallagher are set to make theirs on Friday.
Last year's regional runner-up Villanova is ranked first in the Mid-Atlantic while Georgetown, Temple, Penn, and last year's champion, Princeton, round out the top five. Penn State, Navy, Pittsburgh, and La Salle sit ahead of the Hawks in 6-9 while Lehigh, Bucknell, Monmouth, Duquesne, and Mount St. Mary's cap the top 15.
27 squads are scheduled to race and, sorted by starting box order, include Seton Hall, Villanova, Penn, Georgetown, American, Duquesne, La Salle, Penn State, Rutgers, Monmouth, Pittsburgh, Navy, Princeton, Maryland-Eastern Shore, Loyola (Md.), Rider, Saint Francis University, Mount St. Mary's, George Washington, Bucknell, UMBC, Marshall, Temple, Lafayette, NJIT, Lehigh, and Saint Joseph's (27).
Led by Michon’s individual title and All-Conference performances from both Michon and Scarpill, the Hawks are coming off of a second-place team finish at A-10s on November 2. Of note, Michon is also coming off of a blistering 8k time of 23:53.3 at Lehigh back on October 5, setting the Lehigh 8k course record by a Hawk.
