Assistant Coach/Recruiting Coordinator
Alma Mater: Rider University '97
Experience: 1st Year

Chris Tarello enters his first year as the assistant coach and recruiting coordinator of the Saint Joseph's men's and women's cross country and track and field programs in 2019-20. Tarello comes from Monmouth University, where he was the associate head cross country coach and assistant track and field coach responsible for the middle distance athletes.

"I've known Chris for 30 years and held him in high regard in his last decade or so at Monmouth," said men's cross country and track and field head coach Mike Glavin. "Both Coach Mel and I are elated that we were able to get Chris to consider St. Joe's as the next place he could be the best he can be, and thus make our student-athletes the best they can be."

"I am thrilled to have Chris join us as a member of our coaching staff," added women's cross country track and field head coach Melody O'Reilly. "He brings a lot to the table in regards to recruiting and his ability to coach. He has a calm and thoughtful demeanor that will add a lot to the programs. Chris is eager to get started in his new position right away. He wants to help in any way he can to bring the very best out in our athletes. I look forward to working with him as the program evolves into something bigger and better than it's ever been."

"I would first like to thank director of athletics Jill Bodensteiner, Mike Glavin, and Melody O’Reilly for recognizing and valuing my talents and giving me the opportunity continue my coaching career at Saint Joseph’s University," said Tarello. "I am excited about the opportunity to work with the student-athletes at St. Joe’s. The Hawks have a great history of success in their cross country and track and field programs, and the Atlantic 10 is a nationally-respected conference in collegiate athletics. I'm looking forward to getting started and helping Coach Glavin and Coach O’Reilly build the programs to even greater heights.

"What I'm most excited about is being part of a very supportive and dynamic athletic department. I was impressed with senior associate athletics director Renie Shields, special assistant to the athletics director Christina Foggie, the Athletics Communications department, and the Educational Support Services staff. It was really the people that I met during the interview process that sealed the deal for me. Ultimately, I felt like St. Joe's was a place that not only wants to win, but wants to do it the right way and cares about those who are a part of the St. Joe's family."

Tarello brings 22 years of coaching experience - 11 years at the Division I level - and owns a USATF Level 2 Endurance Certification.

At Monmouth, Tarello transformed a small Division I middle distance group into a program that has been recognized on the national level. The 2019 USTFCCCA Mid-Atlantic Women's Assistant Coach of the Year, Tarello coached 76 individual and relay conference champions between the Northeast Conference and Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference, where 21 individual and relay meet records were set, 13 individual and relay ECAC/IC4A champions, and a pair of 4x800m relay Championship of America women's groups that took home the bronze at the Penn Relays.

Tarello coached a program that garnered 19 track and field conference championship team titles in the past 11 years and the IC4A team title in 2015.

Tarello also coached five student-athletes who went on to sign professional contracts, including Allie Wilson, a two-time All-American First Team finisher in the 800m, and Dylan Capwell, a six-time All-American and the 2015 national runner-up in the 800m.

Prior to Monmouth, Tarello spent 11 years coaching high school track and field and cross country, including at Lincoln Sudbury (Sudbury, Mass.) from 2005-08. In 2007, Tarello led the program to the Nike Team National Northeast Regional Cross Country Championship title and a sixth-place finish at the Nike Team National Championship en route to Boston Globe Cross Country Coach of the Year and Massachusetts MetroWest Cross Country Coach of the Year recognition. He also coached two Massachusetts All-State cross country selections, two All-American relay teams, which set Massachusetts state records, five Massachusetts All-State track and field selections, and seven Massachusetts All-State individual and relay selections.

Tarello owns seven additional years coaching at Sacred Heart High School (Vineland, N.J.), Shawnee High School (Medford, N.J.), and Cherokee High School (Marlton, N.J.).

Outside of coaching, Tarello holds extensive experience in developing and leading camps and clinics and is the primary principal of RunningWorks, Inc. camps and clinics. He is a 1992 graduate of Shawnee High School and multiple-time Meet of Champions qualifier in the 800m and a 1997 graduate of Rider University, where he was an eight-time IC4A All-East selection, multiple-time conference champion, and the program's current recordholder in the 4x400m relay.

With his wife, Cindy, who was a successful cross country and track coach in her own right, and twin daughters, Mia and Ryan, Tarello resides in Brick, N.J.
