EAST LANSING, Mich. -- The Old Dominion field hockey team held Kent State to just one shot and zero penalty corners en route to a 1-0 victory on Saturday afternoon at Michigan State's Ralph Young Field.

Erin Huffman's penalty-stroke goal in the 46th minute proved to be enough for Old Dominion (2-0), who has yet to allow a goal through two games this season.

"We didn't let them build the ball, which was great and a very positive thing," said head coach Andrew Griffiths. "I thought our defense really played well throughout the entire weekend."

Following a defense-dominated first half that featured just three shots and two corners, all by ODU, Huffman beat a defender and found herself one-on-one with the Kent State (0-1) goalkeeper. The keeper took Huffman down on the breakaway, leading to the penalty stroke that Huffman slotted into the lower left side of the cage.

The goal was Huffman's second of the season.

"I think we really came together as a team," said Huffman. "Our goal was to move the ball quickly and move around them."

ODU outshot KSU, 9-1, and also held a 4-0 advantage in corners. In goal, Cam MacGillivray, in her first-ever appearance as Monarch, played the full 70 minutes, making one save for the shutout.

"The biggest thing was to have the mental fortitude and resilience to keep playing our game," said Griffiths. "I thought we did really well with that right to the end."

The Monarchs return to action next Friday at William & Mary at 6 p.m. ET.
