CEDAR FALLS, Iowa -
The UNI Spirit Squads have done it again. For the second year in a row T.C. (The Cat) and the UNI Dance Team will be traveling to Orlando, Fla., in January to compete in the Universal Cheer Association/Universal Dance Association (UCA/UDA) National Championships.
The UNI Dance Team has qualified seventh in its class. They will be competing against 25 other schools' dance teams in search of a national championship. T.C., the Panther mascot, has qualified fourth in the nation among all collegiate mascots. Only the top 10 mascots are invited to compete.
Last year, the UNI Dance Team finished with an all-time best of fifth in the nation. T.C. finished 10th in the nation last year and hopes his high qualifying score this year will propel him to his first national championship.
The UNI Dance Team is made up of 14 members and is student-run. Four members of the squad make up the choreography committee and act as the student coaches. The dance team performs at all home men's and women's basketball games as well as all home football games. This marks the seventh time since 1999 that the UNI dancers have qualified for the UDA's national championships.
This year's qualification ties T.C.'s best, when he also qualified fourth in 2004. This will be T.C.'s fourth appearance at the UCA's college mascot national championship. Last year T.C. was the only mascot representing the state of Iowa, but this year he will go head-to-head with intrastate rival `Herky' from the University of Iowa, who tied for eighth.
The UNI Dance Team will be selling raffle tickets for a new boat from Waterloo Boats to help raise money to cover their expenses. Tickets are available at Waterloo Boats or by asking the dance team at any home event. If you are interested in sponsoring or donating to the dance team or T.C., for their trip to nationals, please contact UNI Sports Marketing at 319-273-3860.
