Cynthia J. Gabel UMKC Scholarship Fund
UMKC Assistant Athletics Director for Internal Operations Cynthia Gabel lost a lengthy battle with cancer on Aug. 20, 2007. Gabel, who was 52, worked at UMKC for eight years.
"We are deeply saddened by the passing of a wonderful friend and colleague," said UMKC Director of Athletics Tim Hall. "Cynthia is going to be missed dearly, as she was highly respected within our University and loved by our student-athletes. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the Gabel family during this very difficult time."
"We are deeply saddened with the loss of one of our cherished colleagues," Summit League Commissioner Tom Douple said. "Cynthia was a leader in our league and will be missed by the entire membership. Her positive outlook and friendly personality touched all of us. Cynthia was always an advocate for the welfare of the student-athletes and could be found at all our events cheering them on from the stands. She was a friend to each of us and one we all turned to for advice. Our condolences go out to Cynthia's family."
While at UMKC, Gabel handled all the compliance and eligibility issues for the school's 15 varsity sports, while also serving as the Senior Woman Administrator. Gabel also served as a sport supervisor for a number of Kangaroo sports during her time in Kansas City. Prior to joining the UMKC staff, Gabel spent 19 years on the enforcement staff at the National Collegiate Athletics Association (NCAA).
A memorial fund has been set up in her name. Contributions to the Cynthia Joy Gabel UMKC Scholarship Fund may be sent to:
