COLLEGE GROVE, Tenn. – Senior William Rainey (Charlotte, N.C.) shot an opening-round 71 (-1) to pace the College of Charleston men’s golf team at the Franklin American Mortgage Intercollegiate at the Grove held at the Grove Club, located just outside of Nashville.
Rainey made three birdies and is currently tied for third on the individual leaderboard – one shot back of current leaders Paul Huber of Cincinnati and Clay Vannoy of Troy (-2). After 18 holes of play, freshman Logan Sowell (Kershaw, S.C.) was the next lowest finisher for the Cougars tied for 16th (+1).
In the current team standings, CofC is tied for third shooting a first-round 292 (+4) along with Ole Miss and Troy. Cincinnati leads the 14-team field at even par, while host Middle Tennessee is second at +2.
“I am really proud of the way our freshmen played today,” CofC Head Coach Mark McEntire said. “The course was playing tough early and they were able to handle their emotions. They all settled down and really finished the round well. We got a solid round from William (Rainey) and except Parker (Derby) to pick it up tomorrow. Overall, it was a good start for and we hope to improve tomorrow.”
Tournament play continues tomorrow with second-round action beginning at 12:03 p.m. (ET) / 11:03 a.m. (CT) as the Cougars tee off the No. 1 with Memphis. Live tournament scoring will be available at: www.Golfstat.com.
