MT. PLEASANT, S.C. – The College of Charleston baseball team closed out the 2016 regular season with a 6-0 win over William & Mary on Saturday at Patriots Point to win the series. The sixth-seeded Cougars will host the Colonial Athletic Association Baseball Championship and take on No. 3 Elon at 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday.
The CofC pitching staff overpowered the Tribe as Nathan Helvey, Eric Bauer and Carter Love combined for the two-hit shutout. Helvey tossed 4.1 innings allowing one hit and striking out four – retiring 10 straight batters at one point – before giving way to Bauer (3-2), who fanned two in 2.2 innings of work and earned the win. Love pitched the final two frames to earn his ninth save of the season, seventh-most in Charleston single-season history. The sophomore’s 13 career saves are the fifth best mark in the program’s history.
William & Mary (25-28, 14-9 CAA) got a two-out double in the first inning, but did not crack the hit column again until Ryder Miconi singled in the sixth. For the weekend, the College’s starting pitchers allowed just two runs in 20.1 innings and struck out 16 batters while surrendering 10 hits.
At the plate, junior Erven Roper and freshman Bradley Dixon turned in a career days as well collecting four hits each. Dixon drove in three runs, one on a single in the first to open the scoring and two more on an eighth-inning base hit to drive in two and stretch the lead to 6-0.
The Cougars (29-24-1, 12-12) totaled 15 hits in the game the 21st time the team has posted double-digit hits this season and the third time the squad has reached the 15-hit plateau.
> Over the last six games, Charleston’s starting pitchers have allowed just eight earned runs.
> Bradley Jones collected two hits in the game, the 21st time he has turned in a multi-hit performance this season.
> Dupree Hart singled in the first inning to extend his hitting streak to a team-high 10 games.
> Hart has recorded a hit in 24 of his last 28 games.
