Herzog Capping Strong Summer

By NU Athletic Communications

Nebraska incoming freshman golfer Leah Herzog has put together an outstanding summer, most recently capturing the Minnesota Golf Association Women's Amateur Four-Ball Championship while playing alongside her sister, Stephanie.

The Herzog sisters capped the two-day tournament at 141 with an opening-round 71 followed by a 70 in the second round on Aug. 8. While Leah will be entering her freshman season at Nebraska, Stephanie will be a junior at Iowa in 2019-20.

Leah Herzog, who was named Minnesota Miss Golf in May before leading Red Wing High School to the Class 2A state championship, posted a 69.4 scoring average during the 2019 high school season, which represented better than a two-stroke per round improvement over her junior year. She was also the Class 2A state runner-up individually for the second straight season. She was a four-time all-state selection during her high school career.

In June, Herzog won the U.S. Junior Amateur Sectional Qualifier at Northfork Golf Course in Ramsey with a 71. She also finished third at the Minnesota Girls Junior PGA Championship at The Jewel Golf Club (June 19-20) with a two-round total of 144, which included a final-round 68.

Her high school season included a course-record round of 65 at The Bridges.

Herzog will continue a strong tradition of top golfers from the state of Minnesota coming to Nebraska. Kate Smith, a senior for the Huskers in 2019-20, was a five-time Minnesota High School champion at Detroit Lakes and the 2016 Minnesota Miss Golf award winner. Other Minnesotans on the Husker women's golf roster in recent years have included Cassie Deeg (Hugo, 2013-16), Steffi Neisen (New Prague, 2011-14), Chrissie McArdle (Eden Prairie, 2004-07) and Jackie Beste (Sauk Centre, 2003-06).

Herzog, Smith and the rest of the Huskers are set to open the 2019-20 collegiate season at the Branch Law Firm/Dick McGuire Invitational in Albuquerque, N.M., Sept. 9-10.
