Popoola Named Kansas Gatorade Player of the Year
Nebraska soccer incoming freshman Marissa Popoola earned 2018-19 Gatorade Kansas Girls Soccer Player of the Year honors on Thursday.
A native of Overland Park, Kan., Popoola played high school soccer at Blue Valley West and helped the team capture a third consecutive state title in 2019. She scored 88 career goals and earned first-team all-state honors on three occasions in addition to being named Class 6A Offensive Player of the Year in 2019.
During her senior campaign, Popoola scored 28 goals and tallied 11 assists. In 2018, she netted 29 goals after scoring 19 goals in 2017 and 12 goals in 2016.
The award, in its 34th year, honors the nation’s best high school athletes for outstanding athletic excellence, high standards of academic achievement and exemplary character on and off the field. By winning the accolade for the state of Kansas, Popoola is a finalist for the Gatorade National Girls Soccer Player of the Year award, which will be announced later this month.
The Huskers announced the signing of Popoola, along with the addition of five other 2019 commits, to the roster on Dec. 14.
