Prior to coming to the College, Smith worked for several organizations, including The Nature Conservancy in Northern Virginia; Capitol College in Laurel, MD; and Fannie Mae in Washington, DC and then Dallas, TX. Smith left Fannie Mae to spend time as a stay-at-home mother, eventually working part-time from home as coordinator of admissions for an executive networking organization in Texas, and later volunteering at a free medical clinic after the family moved to Virginia. She became a substitute teacher in the local school district before reentering the workforce on a full-time basis.
In addition to her professional work, Smith is in her fifth year as a director on the Alumnae Association board at her alma mater.
Originally from Hershey, Pa., Smith graduated from Wilson College in Pennsylvania with a B.A. in Communications and minor concentrations in Political Science and English. She and her husband, Kerry, live in Williamsburg with their three children: Dylan, Logan, and Karissa, and Cameron, the black lab. In their non-working hours, Sarah and her husband spend time concentrating on the sports and academic careers of their children.
