DURHAM, N.C. – Coming off a top 20 victory this past weekend over Santa Clara, the No. 11 Duke Blue Devils (2-1-1) look to carry momentum into this week’s matchup as the open the 2019 Duke Nike Classic Thursday evening against UNLV (2-1-0).
The match, set for a 7 p.m. ET start, and will follow the conclusion of the tournament’s first match between top-ranked North Carolina and LSU, which will begin at 4:30 p.m. Both matches will be broadcast on ACC Network Extra. Last Time Out
It was a thriller Saturday night at Koskinen Stadium, as Duke sophomore Marykate McGuire scored a goal in the 99th minute to lead the 10th-ranked Blue Devils to a 3-2 overtime victory over No. 19 Santa Clara. The Blue Devils also received goals from the duo of sophomore Mackenzie Pluck and senior Ella Stevens. Pluck and McGuire each added one assist to their totals.
First Month in the Books
The Blue Devils closed out the month of August with a 2-1-1 record across the first four games of the campaign. Duke opened the season with a 2-0 victory over La Salle before falling to North Carolina, 2-0, to close out the 2019 Carolina Nike Classic. Duke opened up his home slate with back-to-back top 25 matchups to conclude the month. First the Blue Devils battled to a 0-0 draw in double-overtime against the 13th-ranked Hoyas, before rallying to defeat No. 19 Santa Clara, 3-2, in a overtime victory.
Stevens, McGuire Pace the Blue Devil Offense
The duo of senior Ella Stevens and sophomore Marykate McGuire have paced the Blue Devil offense this season, combining for four of Duke’s five goals this season, while leading the team with two goals apiece.
After only registering one goal last season, Stevens has gotten off to an impressive start in her final campaign. The senior has scored the game-winning goal in the season opener against La Salle, before heading in the go-ahead goal in the most recent matchup versus then-No. 19 Santa Clara.
Likewise, McGuire has began her second year with the Blue Devils in fantastic fashion, headlining the Duke offensive attack. The sophomore scored the put-away goal in the first game of the season to seal the 2-0 victory over La Salle, before registering the golden goal versus No. 19 Santa Clara this past weekend. McGuire leads the team in shot attempts with 11, while also ranking first in shots on goal with five. She has added one assist to her totals.
Duke vs. UNLV
Thursday’s matchup between Duke and UNLV marks the second matchup in program history between the two schools. The first contest between the Blue Devils and the Rebels ended in a 0-0 double-overtime draw. Thursday also marks the 10-year anniversary of the first match between Duke and UNLV, which came on Sept. 5, 2009, in Durham, N.C.
