LEWISBURG, Pa. – The Holy Cross volleyball team’s comeback attempt fell short at Bucknell as the Crusaders dropped a 3-2 match to the Bison on Saturday, Oct. 12. Trailing two sets to none, Holy Cross rallied back to win the next two, but Bucknell held off the Crusaders to earn the five-set victory.

Junior middle blocker Katie Kerins had 18 kills and four blocks to lead the way for the Crusaders (3-17, 0-6 Patriot League). Junior outside hitter Rachel Harding had a double-double of 13 digs and 10 kills, while rookie outside hitter Gracyn Benck recorded 15 kills and five blocks. Junior libero Sophie VanSeveren had 29 digs and four service aces.

Sophie Bullard had 19 kills and 13 digs for Bucknell (13-5, 2-4 Patriot League). Kelsey Laughlin recorded 43 assists, 25 digs and seven kills.

  • Benck had three straight kills to open the match, and the Crusaders took a 6-1 lead after a few miscues by the Bison. Holy Cross led 15-9 after a service ace by sophomore outside hitter Regan Wright, but Bucknell crept back in with four unanswered points before three straight Crusader points put Holy Cross up 18-13, forcing a Bucknell timeout. Out of the timeout, the Bison scored four straight to cut within one, prompting the Crusaders to call a timeout. The Bison pushed ahead to take a 22-21 lead; with Holy Cross leading 24-23 after a block from Benck, the Bison scored four of the next five points to eke out a first-set victory.
  • Bucknell got out to an 11-6 lead to begin the second set, but the Crusaders took points off back-to-back Bison errors to make it an 11-8 game. The Bison began to extend the gap, taking a 15-8 lead before a kill from junior middle blocker Clare Honan stopped the Bucknell streak. Holy Cross cut within 18-16 after a pair of kills from Kerins and a Bison error, but Bucknell had four unanswered points to go up 23-17; Honan had a kill late to cut the score to 24-19, but a service error gave the Bison a 2-0 lead.
  • With the third set tied at 3-3, Holy Cross slowly began to build a lead, going up 15-9 after a kill by Benck. The Bison again began to come back, cutting within 16-14, until the Crusaders had a pair of kills from Benck and Harding to go up by four. Bucknell continued to push, tying the match at 19-19 after a service ace and taking a 22-21 lead after a Holy Cross ball-handling error. The Crusaders then closed out the set with four straight kills, including the final three from Benck, to take a 25-22 win.
  • Bucknell led 8-5 early in the fourth, but after a block from junior outside hitter Renee LeBlanc for the next point, neither team led by more than two points until the Crusaders pushed ahead 22-19 after back-to-back kills by Kerins and Wright. Bucknell took the next two points to force a Holy Cross timeout, and Wright had a kill to put Holy Cross back up by two out of the timeout. The teams traded kills, and with the Crusaders up 24-23, Benck and Honan teamed up on a block to take a 25-23 set win and force a fifth frame.
  • The teams traded points to being the fifth set, with Holy Cross leading 6-5 after an ace by Dwyer. Bucknell had three unanswered points, followed by a kill by Benck to keep Holy Cross within 8-7. The Bison began to pull away, though, taking a 14-8 lead; Kerins had a kill and then teamed up with Benck for a block to keep the Crusaders alive, but Bucknell sealed the victory with a kill for a 15-10 set win.

  • Harding’s double-double was her sixth of the year and her second in as many matches.
  • Benck’s five blocks matched her collegiate best for a single match. She has recorded double-digit kills in three consecutive matches and in four of her last five matches.

  • Holy Cross will return home on Friday, Oct. 18 for a matchup against American. First serve for the Crusaders’ Pink Game is set for 6:05 p.m.
